Music Rotation Wednesdays: November 30

The college radio format is very unique. At KSDB, we cycle new music in and out of regular airplay fairly quickly, and then we move on to newer music to freshen up the sound. This is why no two listening sessions are ever alike. The aim is to expose the community to music they might not have heard before – and might never ever hear otherwise.

The purpose of this weekly post is to give you an insight as to what’s going on with our music rotation and provide a resource to refer to if you are continually hearing a track or artist you love and want more information. Oftentimes, we add music from more than the albums listed here, but these are our favorites. At the bottom, you can catch the music getting the most airplay on 91.9.

Listen live to KSDB 24/7 on 91.9 FM, or stream us on our website or our mobile app (search ‘Wildcat 91.9’).

FOLLOW US on Spotify for a comprehensive playlist for the entire year’s music so far in both alternative and hip hop. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram. @KSDBFM anywhere and everywhere.

New In Rotation (11-28-16)

Jeen. – Modern Life

After her 2014 debut, Tourist, Jeen O’Brien is back for her sophomore record. Both records were self-recorded and produced in O’Brien’s own attic. Jeen is just the latest release from a fem-fronted indie rock band.

Quivers – We’ll Go Riding On The Hearses

Quivers are just starting out and don’t have a big following yet – only about 600 likes on Facebook for reference. But you can hear their wonderful debut, a perfect blend of alternative country and powerpop, during our alternative rotation on KSDB.

Pronoun – There’s No One New Around You (EP)

Pronoun is a special brand of indie pop that takes elements from indie rock kings such as Kurt Vile and Phosphorescent. This four track EP is a nice pop-infused indie rock project.

Sylvan Esso – “Kick Jump Twist”

“Kick Jump Twist” is the latest single to come from indie pop duo, Sylvan Esso, whose self-titled debut dropped in 2014. They are set to have a new record in the new year.

Dude York – “Black Jack”

The beginning of 2017, Dude York are coming out with the next record from a stacked Hardly Art Records roster including the likes of TacocaT, Chastity Belt, IAN SWEET, Protomartyr, and more. Sincerely is set to come out January 27th, the same day as new records from Cloud Nothings, Japandroids, and Ty Segall – we can’t wait.

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-5-50-21-pm1. Mat Shoare – Waking Up Is Hard To Do

Up from #3 last week and one of the most talented indie musicians out of Kansas City right now, Mat is multi-talented. Check out a full album review for the Kansas City indie artist’s record, Waking Up Is Hard To Do. Also find his recent Classroom Series video here.

2. Crying – Beyond The Fleeting Galescrying-3

This album is just nuts. There are fierce synths, funky beats, tear-jerking guitar solos, and wonderful vocals. The band is fresh off a tour through Lawrence with emo studs, Joyce Manor, and indie rock studs, The Hotelier. Needless to say, Crying fits right in with a lineup like that.

3. Mat Shoare – Waking Up Is Hard To Doa4064114699_10

American Wrestlers, out of St. Louis, Missouri, recently came out with this follow-up to their 2014 self-titled debut. The band has a pure indie rock sound comparable to leaders of the industry, The War On Drugs, Real Estate, or Wild Nothing.

4. Pavo Pavo – Young Narrator in the Breakersc4200629-e9a4-40ba-b7bd-d7e4489f8963-400x400

Pavo Pavo are a bizarre version of Grizzly Bear taking elements from experimental bands like Dirty Projectors. There’s certainly the synth and poppiness of Dirty Projectors and the dreaminess of Grizzly Bear. Coincidentally, Pavo Pavo are also signed to PIAS Recordings.

5. Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions – Until The Hunteruntil_the_hunter-jpeg

Hope Sandoval, of Mazzy Star, joined forces with Colm Ó Cíosóig of My Bloody Valentine to make this beautiful dreampop album. The pair collaborated with indie rock legend, Kurt Vile, for a single off of this record, Until The Hunter.
